Focus on J.J. Montgomery's Gun For Hire

Wild Women Authors is pleased to focus on:

Gun For Hire

The Maui Heat Series

by J.J. Montgomery

. . . a drug cartel wants her dead. The cops think she’s a liar. Just another day in Paradise for Sam Winters. . .

The job should have been easy—patrol a swank beach that serves as a backyard for Maui’s rich, kick out the riffraff, and get a tan in the process. But rent-a-cop Samantha Winters didn’t anticipate a deliciously grumpy cop, Sergeant Grady Roark, who comes down to the beach to bust her chops and instead leaves her breathless…and wondering why the one man who could help her seems determined to thwart her at every turn.
Grady is keeping secrets from Sam that have him walking the line between attraction and duty. But when Sam becomes the target of a shadowy organization, Grady will have to choose between the law and the temptation of a woman who has him breaking every rule he’s ever known.
The job should have been easy, but when the bullets start flying, Sam learns nothing is as easy as it seems when you’re a Gun for Hire.

The sunlight was intense after a half hour in that gloomy space, but I squinted hard and kept moving toward a narrow set of steps down to the parking lot. Grady walked a few paces behind me, and if he heard the crinkle of paper as I moved, he elected not to say anything.
Grady hit the remote to his truck and grabbed for the passenger side door, his hand light on my elbow as he helped me up. Paper crackled as my butt hit the seat and Grady’s eyes narrowed. Without a word, he slammed my door and went around to the driver’s side, climbing up into the cab and stabbing the keys into the ignition.
So, I—” I hesitated as I shifted in my seat and my movement was accompanied by the distinct sound of cardboard bending.
No,” Grady muttered, and clicked on the radio. “No talking.”
Shh.” Grady put a finger to his lips, his eyes still on the road. “Any minute you’re going to tell me about the felony crime you just committed. And then I’m going to have to deal with the fact that I was an accessory to a felony crime."
Umm, yeah.” I reached around to the back of my pants and eased the file folder up from my waistband, working it out slowly so as to not lose anything as Grady headed up the hillside toward his house. As I brought it around to look at it, the red block letters damning me to years of incarceration should I get caught, a muscle ticked in Grady’s jaw.
You stole classified documents.” He shook his head from side to side.
I looked up at Grady and then down at the mangled file with the red Top Secret heading. I took a corner of the front sheet and ripped across the width of the page, separating the words “Top Secret” from the rest of the paper.
They’re declassified now.” I crumpled up the classification and shoved it in my pocket.
Grady sighed.
I shrugged and opened the file.”

Focus on: Valerie Ullmer's Unexpected

Unexpected, a contemporary M/M romance
by Valerie Ullmer

A chance meeting will change their lives forever…

From the moment he entered the dark taproom, Caleb Hunt found himself drawn to the handsome man who sat alone at the end of the bar, away from the crowd. His interest in the dark-haired, muscled adonis took him by surprise, not remembering when he’d felt such hunger from a simple glimpse. Unable to stay away, he quickly found an open seat next to him and slid into it. When Ronan turned his ice-blue eyes to Caleb and introduced himself, his warm hand sent shivers of desire through his body and he was enthralled.

Ronan Scott’s boring Friday night had taken a turn for the better when Caleb took the seat next to him. Over the next few hours, he found Caleb easy to talk to and at the same time, he found that he couldn’t tear his gaze away from the beautiful man. Caleb captured his attention in a way that no other had for as long as he could remember.       Taking a chance, he leaned forward and captured Caleb’s lips with his. And with the simple kiss, Ronan understood that Caleb would become an essential part of his life.

As Ronan and Caleb explore their new relationship and integrate their lives together, they realize that not everything will be so seamless…

That’s when he spotted him and everything stopped.
His breathing hitched in his chest and his heart thudded once, hard, and even the music seemed to fade as his gaze landed on a dark-haired man who sat by himself at the bar. As Caleb’s eyes slid down the man’s body of their own accord, he noted the fitted black tee that emphasized the muscles of his arms, back, and shoulders, before his gaze dropped lower to his legs encased in denim.
When he lifted a beer to his mouth and swallowed, Caleb felt his own throat tighten. A shiver of desire passed over him. Never had he felt this way about a man or woman in his life.
Before he could analyze his actions or talk himself out of his stupid plan, he walked toward the man. Part of him wanted to see if the man was as stunning as he believed from across the bar or if he’d been alone for so long that his mind had conjured the perfect man.
Before Caleb could reach the stool next to him, a beautiful blonde glided up to him, running her hand down his chest. Her smile flirty and sensual. Although Caleb had never been propositioned in any way close to resembling what he witnessed, he knew that she offered the man a brazen invitation to get to know her better.
Disappointment flooded Caleb’s chest.
In the next moment, however, she frowned and backed away from him as quickly as she arrived, leaving an empty chair.
Not questioning his good luck, Caleb hurried over and shed his coat, dropping it over the back. He flagged down the bartender and indicated the beer he wanted.
He sensed the man’s eyes on him, but for the moment, he wasn’t brave enough to turn and catch his gaze. Not when his breath had stuck in his throat, and he didn’t know if he could speak without sounding choked.
As soon as the bartender handed him his mug, the man turned his body toward him and leaned over to speak, close to his ear.
“Are you here alone?”
Caleb had to bite the inside of his lip in order not to moan out loud at the sexy, deep voice. Remembering the question, he shook his head and pointed toward Dylan and Garrett across the room. Dylan, of course, had a woman on his lap and was tracing a finger down her neck, before he leaned toward her and his mouth followed the same trail.
Garrett was looking down at his phone. The shy woman he’d been talking to had disappeared, much to Caleb’s disappointment, and another was trying, unsuccessfully, to get his attention. She looked drunk and very loud by the way he flinched every time she spoke.
“Dylan, the one on the right with a woman on his lap, is the biggest flirt in the world. He’s never serious about any woman he takes home. Garrett is his best friend, the complete opposite of Dylan, but he’s loyal.”
The man laughed and Caleb couldn’t help the lift of his lips at the sound. It was deep, rich, and addictive. But when the man turned his ice-blue eyes on him, something unidentifiable swelled in his chest. He could sense that he should speak, to keep this gorgeous man talking for as long as possible. “Are you here alone?”
Smart, Caleb. Just parrot the same question back.
The man smiled before he nodded over to his group of friends. Some were flirting, but others were enjoying the company of their friends on a Friday night.
“The ginger is Hawk; he’s a divorce lawyer who is handling Ryan’s divorce. That’s why they’re hunched over their beers. Ryan’s wife apparently hadn’t been faithful during their entire four-year marriage, and he found out when he came home early from a business trip. Jack is the one who is flirting with the group of women; he’s like Dylan in that way, never serious. He’s a CEO of a tech company and he could have any woman with his looks and the power he exudes, but he’s never been in a serious relationship. Sam is my second-in-command, the one who looks faintly sick, because Adam is a forensic scientist who loves talking about his work.”
Caleb found himself smiling at the group of friends. When he glanced at the man, who had turned back to Caleb after pointing out his friends, he snagged Caleb’s gaze. “So, do you have a girlfriend at home?”
“No. I can’t remember the last time I had a date, much less a successful one. You?”
Caleb breathed a sigh of relief when he shook his head.
“I’m Ronan Scott.” He held his hand out.
Shit, even the man’s name is sexy.
He had to clear his throat before he reached out and grasped Ronan’s large, warm hand in his. “Caleb Hunt.”
Something inside Caleb warmed in increments until fireworks exploded behind his skin, all from a simple touch.

Meet Karla Brandenburg and a compelling heroine

This week, Wild Women Authors welcomes author Karla Brandenburg and Siobhan McCormick from Karla's latest release, The Twins. First up is Siobhan
Where are you from? Edgarville, Illinois.
Tell us a bit about The Twins I left home right after high school – my father was abusive and I wanted to get out of there as soon as I could, but I felt bad leaving my siblings behind. A year ago, my youngest sister died, and a surprise to all of us, it wasn’t the accident we thought it was. When my brother found out the truth, the murderer almost killed him, so I decided it was time to mend fences and go back home.
A young adult who must return to an ugly situation. That shows grit and courage. What did you think the first time you saw Jared? He has a very laid back way of speaking and he’s very easy on the eyes. I’m a nurse, he’s a patient. I wasn’t ever supposed to meet him in person (I monitor a health app) but he was staying in a house my brother suggested I might like to buy, now that I’ve moved back home. The first time I saw Jared, I was afraid he’d know who I was. I was worried about crossing professional boundaries.
Hmm. Complicated but totally understandable. What was your second thought? I wanted to take care of him but he’s a very stubborn man!
Did you feel it was love at first sight? More like love at first phone call. He’s very easy to talk to and has a very sexy voice.
First phone. Good one. What do you like most about Jared? His easygoing manner.
How would you describe him? Tall, dark, handsome, stereotype. He probably has a line of women following him around where he’s from.
Don't they all. The good ones, we mean. How would Jared describe you? Feisty! At least that’s what he says.
What made you choose nursing as a career? I kind of fell into it. I needed something to do with myself, and I’ve always cared about people.
What is your biggest fear? I’ve worked very hard to overcome a past I’m not proud of. I was looking for affirmation in high school, and I didn’t do it in constructive ways. I don’t want to repeat my past mistakes.
Another perfectly understandable part of yourgoals and motivation. How do you relax? I read and I volunteer.
Thanks for giving us insight into your life, Siobhan. Let's talk to Karla for a moment. What movies or books have had an impact on your career as a writer? Raiders of the Lost Ark motivated me to write my first novel. Victoria Holt was my favorite author growing up. The Night of the Seventh Moon sucked me in and I knew I wanted to write like her (but I don’t…)
What event in your private life were you able to bring to this story and how do you feel it impacted the novel? For The Twins, I was recovering from surgery, and I have a health app to monitor my progress. When I made a note about something to discuss with the doctor, I was surprised to receive a “push notification” from the nurse monitoring the app and it sparked my imagination. “You’ve Got Mail” style.
As a [retired] nurse this is fascinating. Good for you for implementing this for your story! What book[s] currently rest on your TBR pile? I have a dozen right now, from Kristan Higgins to Jill Shalvis to Dawn Altieri to Jennie Crusie
Lastly, what's up next and when can we expect to see it on the shelves? I’m finishing my third in the Epitaph Series “The Mirror” which should hit the shelves late July or early August.

Focus on: Tena Stetler

From Tena Stetler, best-selling author of A DEMON'S WITCH, comes the second in Demon's Witch Series, A WARLOCK'S SECRETS  blending the magical and the real…

Welcome to Wild Women Authors, Tena.
Thank you! I’m excited to be here. I love reading your blog.

Tell us what inspired A Warlock’s Secrets?
A Warlock’s Secrets was not a planned book in the Demon’s Witch series. It was originally a three or four books series. After publishing the first book in the series, A Demon’s Witch, many readers and reviewers wanted or assumed that Tristian’s story would be next. So I listened to my readers and wrote A Warlock’s Secrets before submitting rest of the books in the series. The hardest part of writing this book was wrapping my head around who Tristian really was and what he really wanted out of life.
The underlying message is Tristian has a strong moral compasses even though he works as the Demon Overlord’s Enforcer/Assassin. He basically is the paranormal police for the Western Hemisphere. Enforcement is necessary to keep a balance between mortals and creatures which he learned young due to the death of his parents and having to raise his little sister.
Hannah is a strong, smart woman in cyber security and doesn’t take Tristian’s crap. He likes the challenge and her strong personality. But in his darkest hours she is dragged into his magical world. If they survive, is she strong enough to heal his heart and tame the warlock? Or will their secrets destroy them?

Why do you write romance?
I can’t tell you how many times I been asked the question. It’s because I like the happily ever after aspect. I want to whisk my readers away from their everyday lives and problems into an extraordinary world filled with magic.
For me crafting a romance is all about RESPECT, TRUST and LOVE. Only most of my characters are of the paranormal persuasion. I want to create a memorable love story with spice and adventure.  Characters that will grab hold of your heart and hang on long after you’ve read the last word and closed the book with a satisfied sigh.

Let’s take a look into the world of A Warlock’s Secrets.
Years ago, a sacred ceremony at the Dragon’s Moon Coven turned deadly. Son of the high priestess, Tristian Shandie’s life changed forever. With a price on his head and revenge in his heart, he has no choice but to follow in his father’s footsteps to a profession shrouded in secrets. Now his skills as an enforcer for the Demon Overlord are second to none. But dangerous secrets he harbors are a liability he can no longer afford.
A chance meeting with a woman he finds irresistible flips Tristian’s world upside down. Hannah is a cyber security specialist with secrets of her own. Bad boys never appealed to her until Tristian, who changes everything. In his darkest hours, she is dragged into his magical world.
If they survive, is she strong enough to heal his heart and tame the warlock? Or will their secrets destroy them?

Can we have a sneak peek between the pages of A Warlock’s Secrets?
My pleasure.

Inside the house, a shadow passed by the huge bay window. She held her breath. Am I really going to go through with this?
Walking up the steps to the house, she paused. Why would he leave such an expensive car sitting out when he had a four-car garage? She was stalling. Straightening her shoulder's she used the brass doorknocker. There was no answer. She knocked again.
The heavy oak door creaked open. Tristian stood shirtless, his abs rippled as he raised one muscular arm to lean on the doorframe. The skintight blue jeans hung low on his hips and his hair tousled as if he'd not been awake long.
When he stared at her, with those huge blue-gray eyes, tingles careened up her spine. She covered her mouth in case drool pooled in the corners her mouth. He was one sexy male. She sucked in a breath and opened her mouth to speak but nothing came out. A brow arched, he peered questioningly at her then twisted to glance backward into the house. The sunlight streaming through the doorway accentuated several scars across his chest, rib area and a healed slash across his back.      Who gets those kinds of battle scars and lives to tell the tale? Not going to ask. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all.
The corner of his mouth curved up in an inviting sexy-as-hell grin. "Good morning, Hannah. What a  surprise.

Focus on: Cowboy 6 Pack

Every woman loves a six-pack! Six sexy cowboy stories sure to make you swoon as they ride, rope and two-step into your heart!

Broken Vows by Melissa Keir
Rick and Julie Tyler are happily married ranchers, who raise and train horses. When money becomes tight, Rick becomes a firefighter in order to make ends meet but he’s forced to move out of state if he wants more money and a chance as a station chief.
Distance causes problems for the happy couple and turns their world upside down. When Julie puts her foot down, will Rick decide to make the right choice or will their vows break?

EXCERPT for Broken Vows:
“It is morning, already?” Her voice held a husky note which caused his pants to become even more uncomfortable.

“Yes, but it’s too early to get up. Let’s go to bed, and I’ll wake you properly with my kisses.”

She wrapped her arms around his shoulder and snuggled in closer, nuzzling his neck. “I missed you.”

“Me, too.” He carried her toward the stairs and up to their bedroom.
“Let me show you just how much.”

“Only if you make me scream your name more than once,” she teased.

“Anything for you.” He kicked their bedroom door closed and set about to keep his promise.

A bit about our first author, Melissa Keir:
Melissa doesn’t believe in down time. She’s always keeping busy. She is a wife and mother, an elementary school teacher, a book reviewer, owner of a publishing company as well as an author.      Her home blends two families and is a lot like the Brady Bunch, without Alice- a large grocery bill, tons of dirty dishes and a mound of laundry. She loves to write stories that feature happy endings and is often seen plotting her next story.

Cowboy Wrecked by D’Ann Lindun
There’s nothing Rayanne Whitfield wants more than a family to call her own. Top bull rider Luke Greer is badly injured in a riding accident, leaving him unable to sire children. Can these two find a way to build a life together?

EXCERPT from Cowboy Wrecked:

Talking about kids, or the lack of them, was the last topic Luke wanted to cover. “It might surprise you to learn that I like Rayanne. A lot, in fact.”

Cody raised a brow. “Yeah?”

“Yeah. I do.” His declaration surprised him, but it was true. Rayanne was sweet, down-to-earth and not all googly-eyed over his celebrity. In fact, he doubted she’d ever heard of him before.

Surprisingly, he appreciated her lack of fawning over him. Something he would have never believed in the past. But, it didn't matter how much he liked her because there was one big road block between them—kids. She made it painfully obvious she wanted them. And he was unable to provide any should they get serious.

He sighed. “You’re right, Cody. She’s a nice lady. Too good for a rodeo bum like me.”

“You’re no bum,” Cody said. “But you’re not the settling down type either.” He took a long swing of beer. “Neither one of us are.”

“Nope. Footloose and fancy free, just the way we like it.”

Depression settled around Luke as he stared at the mountain peaks fading away in the dark. Life sure had a funny way of reminding you not to get too big for your britches, or it would bring you down a few pegs. He changed the subject. “I think both these boys have a future with bull riding.”

A bit about D’Ann Lindun
Falling in love with romance novels the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She was hooked! She began writing and never looked back.
Thirty-two manuscripts and numerous awards later, she is an Amazon bestseller! Romance appeals to D’Ann because there's just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to have a happy ending. Her particular favorites usually feature cowboys and the women who love them.

Focus on Stephanie Berget & Paty Jager

Every woman loves a six-pack! Six sexy cowboy stories sure to make you swoon as they ride, rope and two-step into your heart!

Today, Wild Women Authors focus on:

Changing a Cowboy’s Tune by Stephanie Berget
When her fiancĂ© demands Mavis abandon her goal of barrel racing at the National Finals Rodeo, she chooses to follow her dream and loses the man she adores.
Dex wants nothing more than to marry the woman he loves and build a future on his family’s ranch, but when he pushes her to settle into life as a mother and rancher's wife, she bolts.
Years apart haven’t dampened their desire, but can they see past their own dreams for the future and invent a life they both love?

Here’s an excerpt:
Dex slid into the booth next to her, his hard thigh brushing against her leg.
The simple touch sent a jolt of electricity through her leg right to her heart. She scooted as close to the wall as she could. It had been foolish to think the years apart would lessen his affect on her.
When he slid closer, she put her hand on his shoulder keep a few inches between them. Another tickle of awareness shot up her arm. Damn! She ate right and exercised, took the best care of her body, and at the first chance, the damned thing betrayed her.
She jerked her hand away and clenched her fingers in her lap.
Dex rested his arm along the back of the booth, his fingers lightly touching her shoulder. He was touching her on purpose, but there was no graceful way to get out of the booth short of crawling under the table. Pretending to flip her hair over her shoulder, she caught the inside of his forearm with her fingernails.
She had to hand it to him. If she hadn’t been watching she would have missed the flinch.
Within seconds, he’d moved his arm back to the table. With a smile, he took a fork and cut off a bite of her pie. “I’ve missed this.”

About Stephanie Berget:
Finding romance beneath a rodeo moon. That’s what Stephanie Berget had in mind when she began writing--adding a realistic view of rodeo and ranching to her Contemporary Western Romance.
She was born loving horses, developing a lifelong love of rodeo when she married her Bronc Rider. They traveled to rodeos throughout the Northwest while she ran barrels and her cowboy rode bucking horses.
Stephanie and her husband live on a farm located along the Oregon/Idaho border, where they raise hay, horses and cattle, with the help of Cisco, the wonder horse, Dizzy Dottie, the Border Collie, and two Munchkin cats, Magic and Martin.

Catch the Rain by Paty Jager
Running from her past, Kitty Baxter catches a glimpse of her future—if she’s brave enough to believe in herself and the kind-hearted stranger who claims she deserves love.
Focused on setting up his new veterinarian practice, Zach MacDonald becomes sidetracked by a karaoke singing beauty with a secret. He sees what others don’t, and becomes determined to make Kitty see that anyone can learn to catch the rain.

Here’s an excerpt:
Kitty’s heart soared as she blended her voice with the man’s. He had a beautiful baritone. She stared into his eyes. The warmth and acceptance she saw in their depths started her belly quivering. She’d avoided men, except for two disastrous dates, ever since school and the bullies that had harassed her for being unable to read and having ratty clothes. She’d been an easy target. But she’d shown everyone. She’d run off at fourteen and found a place to live, and she enjoyed the work she did.
The glint of challenge in the man’s eyes had her embellishing more at the end. She held onto the note and finished with a flourish. The music stopped, and she peered into his eyes.
A roar of voices and thundering applause, reminded her she stood on a stage staring into a stranger’s eyes.
She ran off the stage, dropping the microphone on the table. On her way past her table, she snagged her jacket, before running out the back door of the Sidewinder. She didn’t catch her breath or stop her momentum until she sat behind the wheel of her 1960 Ford pickup. Her heart raced, not from her hurried departure, but from the memory of the man’s eyes.

Focus on Six Fabulous Cowboys and Their 6 Authors

. . . Every woman loves a six-pack! Six sexy cowboy stories sure to make you swoon as they ride, rope and two-step into your heart!

To Steal a Cowboy’s Heart by Kari Lynn Dell
Shannon McKenzie is one of the best investigators the Montana Department of Livestock can sic on cattle and horse thieves, and her definition of undercover has always been strictly professional. Hotshot rodeo announcer Tyler Jernigan was a dangerous exception…one she nearly paid for with her life.
Over a year later Tyler is still recovering from the devastation of being caught in Shannon's net--both as a lover and a suspect. Her sting operation left his brother in prison, Jernigan Livestock Auction closed for good, and Tyler convinced that the Shannon who’d thrown him for a loop and then disappeared never actually existed.
Now Shannon and Tyler have come face to face once more, this time on the rodeo circuit. She knows he’ll never forgive her for destroying his family, but she’ll have to get close enough to persuade him not to blow her cover. Does he dare trust the master pretender and risk letting her steal his heart…again?

She laced her fingers together and studied them, her face suddenly the picture of honest regret. "I am truly sorry. I didn't intend to hurt you."

"You didn't," he said, too quickly, too forcefully. "You lied, you manipulated, and you made a damned fool of me, but I'm fine, thank you."

Her jaw tightened. "Deception is a necessary part of undercover work."

"And you, darlin'," he drawled, "are very good undercover."

She pushed abruptly to her feet. "This is a waste of time. I only came here to find out whether you intend to tell anyone."

He lifted a brow. "That depends."

"On what?"

"Who's the sucker this time?"

A bit about our focus author: Kari Lynn Dell:
Kari Lynn Dell brings a lifetime of personal experience to writing western romance. She is a third generation rancher and rodeo competitor existing in a perpetual state of horse-induced poverty despite a degree from Montana State University and a career in sports medicine that took her to Texas. South Dakota and eastern Oregon before returning to the family ranch in northern Montana. She lives on the doorstep of Glacier National Park along with Max the Cowdog, Spike the Junior Cowdog, her husband and her son.

Cowboy Courtship by Allison Merritt:
Dean Trulove, a third-generation owner of Trulove Cattle Company and Stockyard, has waited for the day he’d inherit the business. Unfortunately, it comes at the cost of his mother’s heart problems and his dad’s sudden retirement. To relieve some of the pressure, he attempts to pick up a damsel in distress at the local watering hole.
Even when he discovers she’s his new employee, he can’t flip the off switch on his object of desire. All the warnings in the world from his old-fashioned father won’t wrestle him away from a woman as skittish as any unbroken horse that’s passed through the stockyard pens.
London Bingham is in a bind—she’s got an unexpected bundle of joy on the way, but luckily, she accepts a new job with an understanding boss. Her only problem is, her sexy boss’s dad, a formidable man with an ages-old stick up his derriere about unmarried mothers in the workplace makes for an uncomfortable situation. As much as she’d like to give in to her persuasive boss and build a relationship, it’s causing work-place trauma and domestic drama.
To Dean, it’s clear that London needs a good ol’ cowboy to show her that she can have it all—a family, a career, and a man with a heart wider than the Arkansas River to remind her that even a woman from the wrong side of the tracks can find the happiness she deserves.

“You hit on London in a bar?” Ryan elbowed Dean in the side.

Dean rubbed his ribs. “I didn’t know she was coming to work here today. It’s for the best that things worked out how they did. That might have been awkward.”

Things hadn’t worked out well for her, before or after her encounter with Dean Trulove. But thank God she’d been spared the embarrassment of waking up to find out she’d slept with one of her bosses. “About that—”

“No need to explain. What happens on your time is your business. Anything that happens here, we’ll deal with as it comes. Ry, you’d better take Miss Bingham to your mom’s—I mean her new office before Patty comes looking for her. She’s mean as an old sow.” Dean winked at her.

Her face warmed again. That wink was a lady killer. The bona fide signature of a man looking to charm the panties right off of a woman. Keep your panties on and your head out of the clouds, London. He’s obviously not hurting because you turned him down. And thank God he’s not pissed about it.

A bit about our second focus author, Allison Merritt:

A love of reading inspired award-winning and international best-selling author Allison Merritt to pursue her dream of becoming a writer who explores historical, paranormal, contemporary, and fantasy romances, often combining the sub-genres. She lives in a small town in the Ozark Mountains with her husband and dogs. It's not unusual to find her lurking in graveyards, wandering historical sites, or listening to ghost stories.

Wild Women Focus: P.J. MacLayne's The Baron's Cufflinks

What starts as Girl's Night Out ends in murder, and Harmony Duprie is a suspect.

She's innocent, of course, but with no alibi, the sheriff's department won't remove her from the list of suspects. It doesn't help when a waitress from the bar gets beaten up and the only clue is a slip of paper with Harmony's name on it. Throw in a rookie deputy dead set on building his reputation and Harmony must tread carefully.
But caution isn't Harmony's middle name and she plunges head first into danger to defend her honor. What she finds is a web of half-truths and suspicions implicating several law enforcement agencies, with Jake, her ex-lover, stuck in the middle of it all.
Can Harmony rescue Jake and find the real culprit before she becomes the next victim?

Here’s an excerpt from The Baron’s Cufflinks:
Not that I particularly liked Agent Felton. But I only knew two FBI agents and couldn't tolerate the other one. Although Felton didn't count as a friend, he wasn't an enemy either. Still, it surprised me when he agreed to meet for lunch, no questions asked.
I spotted him right away when I entered the small Chinese buffet place, his suggestion, near his office. He stuck out like a sore thumb amid the crowd of secretaries having lunch. It had been a few months since I’d seen him, and gray hairs were now scattered in with the brown. Meeting him on his home turf meant I'd need to be on my best behavior, but I was good with that.
The restaurant’s Shanghai soup dumplings were a treat and I was on my second serving when Felton wearied of our sporadic chit-chat. “You didn’t call me to talk about the weather. Or to tell me you’ve realized that you’re deeply in love with me. What is it you want, Miss Duprie?”
I could play it for kicks or play it straight. The choice seemed obvious if I didn’t want to tick him off. I swallowed and looked him square in the eye. “Information. Do you know anything about a guy by the name of Tadd Foard?”
The agent leaned back in his chair, crossed his arms, and thought for a moment. “Can't say that I do. Why?”
“He was murdered a few days ago.”
“And you care why? Are you sticking your nose where it doesn't belong again?” He grinned as he raised a spoonful of the egg drop soup towards his mouth.
     “I may be a suspect.”
We spent the next few minutes cleaning up the soup that had sprayed everywhere.
