The Wylder County Social Club

In celebration of the release of the Wylder West series, the newest project out of the Wild Rose Press, Wild Women Authors is pleased to focus on: The Wylder County Social Club by Nicole McCaffrey.

Eliza Jane O'Hanlan is called west to care for her ailing mother. Raised by a spinster aunt, she only knows that her mother is a successful businesswoman. When she arrives in Wylder she is shocked to learn her mother is the town madam. But the secrets don't end there…

Doctor Sam "Coyote" Sullivan saw enough suffering and dying in the war to last a lifetime. He is more than happy to help the town madam keep her girls free of disease—and worse. The moment she arrives in town, the madam's daughter makes it clear she doesn't approve of her mother's unconventional methods—or him.

Before long, Eliza doesn't just have the town of Wylder in a stir. She has Coyote pretty stirred up, too.

 Excerpt:

"Howdy!" The girl said, regarding her with a wide smile.  "You new here, honey? Miss Addie didn't say we had any new girls comin' on."  She walked to the porch rail and extended a hand.  "My name's Ruby."

Eliza climbed the steps. Up close, Ruby looked much older than "girl."  Considerably so.

"Miss O'Hanlan," the doctor called from the yard below.  "Before you go inside, I think—"

"Come on in," Ruby held the door open.  "Miss Addie had a fall a little while back so she won't be down here to greet you, but I'll take you up. What'd you say your name was ag'in hon? Course it don't matter, we'll be changin' it anyway…"

The girl rambled on but Eliza stopped in mid step.  Heavy red drapes with gold trim covered the windows, blocking most of the light and keeping the interior dim. A gold-trimmed mirror all but covered one wall and a life-sized painting of a woman who looked just like Mother, wearing a low-cut velvet gown, dominated the first landing.

The cloying aromas of perfume and tobacco mingled to tease her nose along with another muskier scent she couldn't place. "This looks like…" She turned a slow circle.

The doctor bounded up the steps.  "Miss O'Hanlan, I think you should know—"

A prickle of realization moved over her skin.  "This is a whore house!"

Shot Through the Heart by Andrea Downing

Gunslinger Shiloh Coltrane has returned home to work the family's Wyoming ranch, only to find there's still violence ahead. His sister and nephew have been murdered, and the killers are at large. Dr. Sydney Cantrell has come west to start her medical practice, aiming to treat the people of a small town. As she tries to help and heal, she finds disapproval and cruelty the payment in kind.

When the two meet, it's an attraction of opposites. As Shiloh seeks revenge, Sydney seeks to do what's right. Each wants a new life, but will trouble or love find them first?

Wild Women Authors is pleased to feature Andrea Downing and Shot Through the Heart, a recent historical romance released by the Wild Rose Press. Up first is gunslinger turned Wyoming rancher, Shiloh Coltrane.

Good morning, Mr. Coltrane. Tell us something about yourself, beginning with where you are from.  Born and raised in Wyoming

Tell us a bit about Shot Through the Heart. I used to be a hired gun, travelling around quite a bit.  I left my family’s ranch because I couldn’t get on with my papa, but I finally decided to hang up my guns and go back and help my sister, who’d inherited the ranch.  Trouble is, when I got back on home I discovered my sister and her son had been murdered, so of course, I need to find those men that killed her before I can settle well back home.

What did you think the first time you saw Sydney Cantrell? I thought she was an angel descending the steps in the saloon.  I knew she couldn’t be a soiled dove, but I had no idea who—or what—she was.

What was your second thought?  The next time I saw her I was waiting to see the new doctor…only to discover it was her!  You can imagine my surprise, and also my embarrassment because, after all, when you see a doctor there are private things you don’t want to show or discuss with a woman.  It was strange.

Did you feel it was love at first sight?  Pretty much, but I was plum confused so I wasn’t really thinking much about my feelings at that point.

What do you like most about Dr. Cantrell?   She’s real caring, for both the townspeople and the local Indians.  But I’m not sure her independence is a real good thing—seems a bit headstrong to me, but then maybe we both are.

How would you describe her? I’m not sure whether you mean her looks or her personality.  Looks-wise, she’s got this red-gold hair and almost hyacinth-colored eyes and really pale skin. She’s beautiful.  Personality-wise, as I said, she’s really independent and headstrong; makes up her own mind and is difficult to dissuade from her own opinions. I guess that’s how she became a doctor against her parents’ wishes.

How would she describe you?  Probably in a very similar way—we’re both set in our ways and have our own ideas of things we’re not likely to give up. That’s a problem, ‘cause I’m going after my sister’s killers and Syd doesn’t approve of killing.

What made you choose gunslinging as a career? What makes anyone choose it?  You sort of fall into it.  You find you’re quick with your gun and a good shot, don’t mind fighting people, and like the travel.  But I got sick of taking orders from other men who didn’t want to get their hands dirty, so to speak.

What is your biggest fear?  Not finding my sister’s killers.

How do you relax? Huh? Who the heck relaxes? What’s that? I’ll be running a ranch when I’m done with those murderers and there’s always something to be done on a ranch.

Who is your favorite fictional character?   I don’t know any fictional characters; I don’t read much, if that’s what you mean.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?  Keep your guns clean, your eyes open, and a slipknot on your horse.

Thanks for spending time with us, Mr. Coltrane. And thank you for offering us an excerpt from Shot Through the Heart:

She crouched behind him, unable to stop the thought her patient’s physique was a prime example of why a female shouldn’t be a doctor, according to her last professor. Oh, yes—we wouldn’t be able to treat men without thinking of marriage. Ha! She shook her head to banish the thought, now supplanted by admiration for the curve of his buttocks, and stood up. Put on her professional tone. Looked into eyes the color of a storm-brewing sky and felt a rush of desire to run her hands though the shaggy blond hair.

Never. Never ever.

She breathed out, pulled herself back to the moment.

“You’re covered in glass.”

“What else is new?”

“Are you in pain?”

“Some. It can wait. Not enough to concern me.”

“You’re going to have to take off your pants and lie on your stomach so I can examine you.”

He didn’t take his eyes off her as he said, “Well then you’re going to have to help. My hands….” He held out his hands, palms up, for her to see.

She realized he was right but resented her own huff of annoyance as he lifted his arms away from his sides. She reached for the buckle on his gun belt first, her irritation with his smirk making her proceed faster than she might have, with less care.

He grimaced.

“Did that hurt?”

“’Course it dang well hurt. I’ve got glass—”

“I can see you’re covered in glass, Mr.?” It suddenly struck her she’d been so stunned by her patient, she hadn’t even got his name.

“Coltrane. Shiloh Coltrane.”

She pulled herself together once more as she stood, disconcerted, her gaze avoiding his. “Perhaps you’d like to see the barber? This is something he can—”

“If I wanted a shave, I’d see the barber. What I want is…what I want is to get this dang glass out of my skin, my hands particularly. And the piece that’s sticking me in the…the…behind.”

“There are bits in your face as well.” She reached for his belt without another word and undid it, hanging the gun belt on the chair before reaching for his pants belt and pulling it free. That, too, landed on the chair.

“I know I’ve got bits in my face. Let’s just deal first with the hands and …and behind.”

“All right,” she said. “I’m not going to take your pants off for you. Let me see your hands.”

Once more, Shiloh held out both hands, palms up.

Flustered, she blurted, “Sit down.” She went to her bag and searched for the carbolic, gave it a shake before putting some on a cloth and wiped a pair of tweezers. She pulled a tin basin out of the bag as well. She pivoted back to him to find him still standing. “Sorry I forgot. You can’t sit, can you?”

“Not really. Am I causing you problems?”

Now it’s time to chat with author Andrea Downing, beginning with:

What movies or books have had an impact on your career as a writer?  Fortune’s Daughters by Elizabeth Kehoe and Centennial by James Michener  The former is about the Jerome sisters, one of whom, Jenny, was Winston Churchill’s mother and another of whom, Clara, married a Brit who started one of the first cattle companies in Wyoming.  Centennial  touched on the British starting ranches as well, and the two of them together gave me the idea for my first book, Loveland.

What event in your private life were you able to bring to this story and how do you feel it impacted the novel?  There isn’t really an event as such, but in 2012 I was able to purchase a small holiday home outside of Jackson, WY, in Wilson.  Since then I’ve got to know Wyoming pretty well—I’d traveled there many times before as well—so it’s become the setting for most of my books.  I’m not sure, in this book, the Wyoming setting made much of an impact other than the traveling Shiloh has to do and the long months he spends away because of the distances involved.

Tell us a bit about your publisher: how did you hear about them and what influenced your decision to submit to them?  I’ve been with The Wild Rose Press since my first book, back in 2012, so I am sticking with them.  They have great respect for the most part for their authors and treat us pretty well.

What book[s] currently rest on your TBR pile?  Are you kidding?!  I have about fifty novels on my kindle waiting to be read, mostly literary fiction with a few romances thrown in.  I read a lot of books set in the West, such as those by Ivan Doig, Anne Schroeder, or Paulette Jiles, but I also read western romance of course, such as those by Shanna Hatfield, Patti Sherry-Crews, and Hebby Roman.

Lastly, what's up next and when can we expect to see it on the shelves?  I’ve been working on and off on a women’s fiction book but that’s resting, you might say.  The pandemic has really taken it out of me with my daughter and son-in-law living here so I have no idea when I’ll get back to it and when you’ll see it on the shelves.

Sadira Stone and Christmas Rekindled

. . . Bartender River Lundqvist has a damn good reason for hating Christmas. Bangers Tavern is the perfect place to lay low over the holidays—until Charlie walks in. His first encounter with the saucy server nine years ago was utter humiliation. Her reappearance stirs up powerful desires and hopes for a new start. But the timing is all wrong.

. . . Back in Tacoma to care for her estranged dad over the holidays, freelance web designer Charlie Khoury braces herself for the suckiest Christmas ever. A temporary job at Bangers Tavern gives her a chance to escape Dad’s criticism and blow off some steam. But why does the hunky bartender seem to hate her?

. . . A pretend girlfriend is just what River needs to keep his family off his back—until a kiss under the mistletoe flares hot enough to melt the North Pole. When greedy developers threaten Bangers Tavern, River and Charlie must team up to save it. Their sizzling chemistry feels like the real thing—but everyone knows rebound relationships don’t last.

 Excerpt:

Her low, throaty chuckle made him want to kiss her again. Though he pretty much wanted to kiss her anytime she was within range.

She laid her hand palm-up on the center console. “The thing is, I’m not looking for a relationship.”

Remembering a bit of Dawn’s wisdom, he nestled his hand into hers. “You never find a relationship when you’re looking for one.”

Her gaze softened, open and vulnerable. “Are you looking?”

Warning sirens blared inside his head. This was a question to answer very carefully. “If you’d asked me a month ago, I’d say, ‘No way.’ But then, I kissed this girl under the mistletoe, and…”

She closed her eyes, lifted his hand, and pressed it to her sternum. Beneath his palm, her heart thudded fast. His pulse sped to match hers. He held his breath.

“I like you, River.” Her whisper matched the brush of snowflakes against the windows.

“I like you too.”

She inhaled deeply, then met his gaze. “Enough to be my friend?”

He nodded, mesmerized.

“Because my life is a mess right now, and I have no idea what the fuck I’m doing.”

Her coarse language stirred up a heady swirl of laughter, sympathy, and arousal. He scooted as near as the center console allowed and placed his lips close to her ear. “I’ll tell you a secret. Me neither.”

Fire flickered in her eyes’ inky depths. Her lips parted. A golden thread wound around his heart and tugged him toward her. His thumb stroked the delicate line of her jaw as he closed the distance.

Author Bio:

Ever since her first kiss, Sadira’s been spinning steamy tales in her head. After leaving her teaching career in Germany, she finally tried her hand at writing one. Now she’s a happy citizen of Romancelandia, penning contemporary romance from her new home in Washington State, U.S.A. When not writing, which is seldom, she explores the Pacific Northwest with her charming husband, enjoys the local music scene, plays darts (pretty well), plays guitar (badly), and gobbles all the books. Tell us about what you write:

I write steamy contemporary romance set in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. My Book Nirvana series centers around a quirky bookshop in Eugene, Oregon. Gelato Surprise is a steamy older woman/younger man beach romance novella. The Bangers Tavern Romance series is set in a neighborhood tavern in Tacoma, Washington, where I live—the town, not the tavern! Each story features a holiday celebration in Bangers Tavern: Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, 4th of July, Halloween, etc. During this sad time when so many bars, restaurants, and other businesses are shut down, Bangers Tavern gives me the chance to virtually share the fun, camaraderie, and bar food I miss so much. And each volume includes tasty cocktail recipes I’ve personally tested and tweaked—a tough job, but I do it for my readers (wink).

Under my own name, I write cozy mysteries and creepy short stories—think The Twilight Zone—but so far only one creepy short has been published. I’ll get to the rest of them eventually, but right now I’m having too much fun writing romance!

By Promise Made

Trained to protect her queen at all costs, Katherine Payne can show no mercy to the handsome messenger, Hugh Cullane, despite the way his stolen kiss unsettles her single-minded sense of duty. Trapped between the English and Scottish armies, she must escape with four-year-old Mary, Queen of Scots. Hugh joins her as they are chased by men determined to murder the young queen in their own quest for power. By promise made they will keep her alive!

Wild Women Authors is pleased to welcome back historical romance author Susan Leigh Furlong and Katherine Payne from Susan’s recent release out of the Wild Rose Press, By Promise Made. Kit will go first.

Please tell us a bit about yourself, Katherine. “People who know me well call me ‘Kit.’ Orphaned as a baby, I was left on the steps of the convent with my dowry in my blanket. The church raised me until I was sixteen when, in exchange for my dowry and his support of the church, I was wed to a man I had never met. Four years later, now a widow, with no money and no future, Captain Rand took me to train as the guardian for the young queen, Mary of Scotland, at the request of her father, James V.  Rand trained me well, and I became the child’s last line of defense. One of the hardest decisions I had to make was when Hugh Cullane came with yet another betrothal request from the son of English King Henry VIII, but, to save my queen from a forced marriage, I ordered him beheaded and his head sent back to England in a jar.”

Tell us a little about Hugh Cullane. “Hugh, a Scot by birth, left his home in the southern Highlands to live as a gambler and rogue in London. He made a misplaced wager of the dagger his father gave him, resulting in the accidental death of the man who won it. Hugh, found guilty of murder, will hang until a pardon from young King Edward offers him his freedom in return for delivering a betrothal message. Hugh, a man used to winning at dice and with the ladies, is dumbfounded when I don’t fall into his arms and grant his every wish. I do have to admit that his stolen kiss made me regret the decision to behead him, but my duty to Queen Mary gave me no choice.”

What kind of a man is Hugh? “Hugh is a fine-looking man with auburn hair, beige eyes that twinkle, and a smile that brightens any day. He is also quick-witted and charming, and even though I saw all these qualities, I could not let them cloud my judgement about the danger whoever sent him presented to the queen. I later learned of his kindness and courage, qualities he often tried to hide, but I still could not trust anyone when it came to defending my queen.”

When did Hugh realize he was in love with you? “I think he had an initial attraction to me when he stole a kiss in the forest before he knew who I was, but, having never been in love, it took him until he saw me in danger to realize he wanted to fight beside me. I told him my duty could not allow me to fall in love, but Hugh said he would wait, and he did, until I recognized that I needed and wanted him as much as he did me.”

We understand life was not always easy in Scotland in the 1500’s. “While living in the queen’s quarters made for an easier life than most people of the time had, the dangers facing Mary were staggering. She could never live a peaceful life when governments, kings, and armies fought for control over her. Her life was not her own, and I would never wish being queen on anyone.”

We learned you met some unusual characters. Tells us about them. “While on the road escaping Mary’s own Scottish regent, the Earl of Arran, we met the Countryside Players, a traveling acting troupe. In these times people shunned actors, viewing them as lower than snails, but we found the five players to be clever, generous, and kind. They took us in, disguised us with their costumes, and risked their own lives to protect us. The most daring of their plots was when, during their Feast of Fools presentation for the Earl himself, they rescued Hugh from the pillory and me from a jail cell. We escaped in their wagon by posing as Rat Catchers, another shunned, but much needed profession of the times.

Kit, if you could go back and change your story, how would you do it? The only thing I would change would be for me to recognize and accept sooner how much I cared for Hugh and him for me. I kept pushing him away, believing that to do my duty, I had to keep Hugh out of my life. It had always been difficult for me to trust anyone but myself until I finally put my trust in Hugh, and it became the best decision I ever made.

Now it’s time for Susan to answer questions.

What influenced you to become a writer of historical fiction? “I have always been fascinated by how people lived years ago. I’m not sure if I could have endured how difficult their lives were, but I would love to hear their stories. My favorite books are historical ones. As a child I read Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink over and over. It’s a story of a girl growing up in the 1860’s and won a Newberry in 1936. I loved Tom Sawyer and all the little orange-covered biographies in the series called Childhood of Famous People. The past must be escapism for me.”

Do your books require a lot of research? “Yes, they do. I love to do the research even though old books and records make me sneeze. The invention of Google has improved my allergies! I try to be as accurate as I can and build my fictional story around actual events. By Promise Made  is built around the war waged by King Henry VIII in an attempt to force four-year-old Mary to wed his nine-year-old son, Edward. The last battle of this so-called ‘Rough Wooing’ was at Pinkie Cleagh. Cleagh is Gaelic for ‘valley, but why ‘Pinkie’ isn’t known. As soon as I came across the name ‘Pinkie’ I had to find out more about it. The battle ended in disaster for the Scots, but they avoided giving Mary to an English husband by sending her to France to marry the five-year-old Dauphin. It sounds unbelievable, but it is all true.”

What things in your real life do you bring to your writing? “Everything I write always seems to eventually include a loving family. I often don’t start out that way, but an extended family always seems to factor itself in. In By Promise Made, Mary, Kit, Hugh, and the Countryside Players form an unusual, but strong family bond. Secondary characters are almost always children, children who need protection or a family of their own.”

What books are in your TBR pile? “Right now I have twelve books waiting on my Kindle – That’s nothing compared to my sister who has fifty – It must be a family trait! Right now I am trying to read new releases from my publisher, The Wild Rose Press, and write reviews for Amazon and Goodreads. I enjoy seeing what other new authors write about. I also have the last  two books of the twelve book Poldark series that I borrowed from a friend to finish.”

Tell us about your publisher. “By Promise Made is my second book published by The Wild Rose Press. I have continued to work with my editor, Eilidh MacKenzie, who specializes in Scottish novels, and have found her invaluable in ensuring the quality of my writing and research. I also appreciate how Wild Rose keeps authors aware of changes, concerns, and questions about publishing. The pandemic shut down the printing for a time, but since the staff works mostly from home, Wild Rose continued to prepare books and has now resumed a schedule of releasing novels.”

Anything on the horizon? “By Promise Made is a stand-alone book about a grown-up Hugh who was the orphaned child, adopted by Robin Cullane, the hero of my first book, Steadfast Will I Be.  I am also working on a third book, as yet untitled, about another member of the Cullane family, Leena, Hugh’s younger sister. I love this era and this family, and since Robin and Suannoch Cullane have eight children and many grandchildren, I hope to spend time with them for a while longer.”

Debby Grahl and Mountain Blaze

Wealthy Diana Thompson falls in love with cowboy Dillon McCoy. Now both must run from a killer while saving the Lazy M ranch.

Rodeo star Dillon McCoy comes home to the mountains of North Carolina to take over the running of the family ranch, the Lazy M, unaware danger awaits. Diana Thompson, having doubts about her engagement to Trent Sawyer, needing time away, agrees to leave Chapel Hill and spend Thanksgiving with her friend Jenn at the Lazy M.

When Diana and Dillon meet, neither can deny their attraction, but both must resolve past relationships before giving in to their desire. After Dillon turns down an anonymous offer to purchase the ranch, attempts are made on his life. When a body is found, Dillon is determined to discover who wants the McCoy land enough to commit murder, while he and Diana try to elude the killer.

Wild Women Authors is pleased to feature Debby Grahl and rodeo champion Dillon McCoy as they celebrate Mountain Blaze, a contemporary romantic suspense,  released out of the Wild Rose Press. First up is Dillon.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Howdy, I’m Dillon McCoy. My family owns the Lazy M Ranch located in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains outside of Asheville, NC. Not only does the ranch offer cabins to rent, we have beautiful scenery and riding paths.

What made you choose the rodeo for a career? As far back as I can remember, I’ve loved horses and watching rodeo competitions on TV. I went to college out west, and as soon as I graduated, I joined the rodeo circuit. I’m proud to say, I’ve won one silver and one gold buckle.

Knowing what you know now, if you had it to do over again, would you stick with being a rodeo rider or do something different? I’d still be a rodeo rider, but I’d think twice about getting involved with Tonya.

What is your biggest fear? Getting hurt and ending up like my buddy Stew.

Who is your favorite fictional character and why? Matt Dillon. I love watching reruns of Gunsmoke. Besides, his last name is Dillon.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received? Never underestimate the horse.

Hah! Good one. Thanks for spending time with us, Dillon. Now we’d like to chat with Debby.

Which writer or character[s], from either books or movies, [or both] have had a major impact on your writing? My first love is classic  British murder mysteries. Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh are my favorites. The first book I wrote, Decorated to Death, is a mystery cozy. Years ago when I submitted this book to a publisher, I was told those type of stories weren’t selling. If I wanted to sell books, I needed to write romance. So I combined my love of mysteries and my addiction to romance novels. My romances always contain mystery and suspense.

With regard to research, where did you start for this novel? Did that lead you down different paths, thereby changing the original concept? I love both the ocean and mountains. I live near the ocean, and thankfully my cousins live a few hours away in North Carolina. The idea for Mountain Blaze came to me while we were all touring the area around Asheville, NC. It was Fall, and the spectacular display of color against the backdrop of the Smoky Mountains was breathtaking. We hiked a while and discovered a scenic overlook which revealed a stream winding through the valley below. Then we came upon a small ranch with cabins to rent and horseback riding. As we waited for the horses to be saddled for a trail ride, my writer’s imagination replaced the nice older man with a handsome cowboy. What would his story be? As we rode through the lush woods, the air fragrant with the smell of pine, Dillon McCoy took shape in my mind.

We drove down the mountain into Waynesville. This is a great little town where I discovered Mast General. A fun, old-fashioned country store, this is one of my favorite places to shop. We decided to stop in a café, and while sipping a delicious cup of coffee, I noticed an attractive woman seated at an adjacent table. Her clothes were stylish. She looked as if she had just walked off Fifth Avenue. Once again, my writer’s imagination took over, and Diana Thompson was born. Now, what circumstances could bring the cowboy and the wealthy city girl together?

Tell us a bit about your publisher. How did you hear about them; what influenced you to submit to them; how is the submission process; what is the turn-around time from date of query to date of release? I submitted to The Wild Rose Press, after my previous publisher went out of business. Mountain Blaze will be the second full length novel I’ve had with TWRP, and I also have a contract for my second anthology story. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with my editor, Dianne Rich. She makes the editing and rewrites easy on my author’s ego. Every writer thinks their story is perfect and can be a little indignant when their told their baby has flaws.

What are you reading right now? I go in spurts with my reading. Right now I’m between 1920’s Carola Dunn’s sleuth, Daisy Dalrymple, and Molly Harper’s Sweet Tea and Sympathy.

What's next for you? I’m working on the sequel to Mountain Blaze. Island Heat  begins on a cruise ship and ends on Hilton Head Island, SC, and is full of romance, intrigue, and murder.
