Fatal Stand by Micehlle Godard-Richer

Will they finally put an end to his sadistic reign of terror?

Wild Women Authors focus on Fatal Stand, a contemporary psychological thriller, written by Michelle Godard-Richer, and recently released by the Wild Rose Press.

About Fatal Stand:  Two years earlier, Jessica witnesses a serial killer, David, in action, and becomes his next target. With help from Jon, a former FBI agent, she manages to survive his murderous wrath and believes him dead.

On the day of their daughter’s birth, Jessica and Jon learn David is alive and plans to come after them again. Running with a newborn daughter and a nine-year-old son isn’t an option. Instead, they fortify their homestead with high fences and a sophisticated security system, preparing to make a final stand.

Despite being surrounded by allies, Jessica struggles to care for her newborn under the strain of their living situation. Alone in the night, she sees and hears things the cameras don’t capture. She questions her sanity but refuses to break, determined to protect her family from the monster of her nightmares—David.

David can’t forgive Jessica, and he can’t move on. Instead, time fuels his obsessive need for revenge. With a new identity and a surgically altered face, they’ll never see him coming.

An excerpt for Fatal Stand:

Later that night, Jessica’s eyes flew open, struggling to adjust to the dark as the hair prickled on the back of her neck. She scrambled out of bed and picked up her phone from the nightstand. Three in the morning, and Cassie wasn’t making a peep.

What had woken her and set her on alert?

The kids.

She rushed into the hallway and pushed open Bryce’s door. His chest rose and fell in sleep. Jessica stepped over the toy cars he’d left on his floor and peered out his window. Hay stalks swayed in the field that was otherwise empty. No creepy man. Maybe the memory of the last time Jon was away during the night had weighed on her subconscious mind.

Jessica left Bryce’s room, shutting the door behind her, and stepped across the hall. The door stood open a crack from when Cassie had woken an hour earlier to feed. She peered inside and smiled at the calm expression on her baby’s sleeping face.

Satisfied all was right with her world, Jessica went back to bed. With any luck, she’d catch another few hours of sleep before Cassie woke again. She curled her arm under her pillow and shut her eyes.

“Jessica,” a male voice whispered.

She leaped out of the bed and searched the dark corners of her room. Nothing.

“I see you, Jessica.” The same spine-chilling whisper came from the baby monitor.

Her ears rang and her pulse raced. Cassie! Jesus!

She yanked open the drawer of her bedside table. Her clammy hand slipped on the grip of her revolver. She wiped her hand on her pajama bottoms, picked up the gun, and ran into the hallway.

With her bare foot, she pushed open the nursery door, and with the gun poised to shoot in front of her, she dashed inside. She swept the room fast, the way Jon had taught her. No one. But she still needed to check the closet. Steeling herself, she crossed the room. The closet door creaked as she tugged it open. Nothing except Cassie’s baby clothes.

Bryce!

She shut the door to the nursery, then swung open Bryce’s door, and charged inside, gun at the ready. No one except Bryce, still fast asleep. Her foot landed on one of his toy cars, the metal pressing into the sensitive skin covering the ball of her foot. Resisting the urge to cry out, she swung open the closet. She shifted his clothes around. Thankfully, no one hid behind them.

Jessica took a deep breath to slow the tremors in her hands. The kids were safe. What next?

She stood in the hallway between the two rooms, heart in her throat, and forced her brain to work. Two receivers came with the baby monitor. One sat on her bedside table and the other was on the kitchen counter. That made sense for an intruder because the back door was in the kitchen.

She didn’t want to leave her children. But with no one in her room or the kids’ rooms, the intruder couldn’t be behind them. The only room between her and the kitchen at the opposite end of the hallway was the main bathroom.

Jessica could scream for Trent and Cynthia, but they were in the spare room on the opposite side of the kitchen. Besides, if someone waited in the kitchen with Trent and Cynthia unaware, they could walk into a trap.

With the gun steady in her grip, Jessica scurried the few feet down the hallway to the door of the bathroom. The door stood ajar. From the hallway, the shower stall and toilet were visible in the mirror hanging over the vanity. Again, no one.

Saliva pooled in her mouth, and she swallowed it around a lump in her throat. Oh, God. Now the kitchen.

She plastered her back to the wall and sidestepped along the hallway toward the kitchen. Luckily, the carpet muted the sounds of her movement. Steeling her nerves for whatever was to come, she stepped around the corner with the revolver raised.

The kitchen was also unoccupied, and the baby monitor sat where she’d left it beside the coffee maker. With the open floor plan, she could see into the living and dining areas, and they were also clear. If the voice didn’t come from either receiver or Cassie’s nursery, then where the heck had it come from?

Slow Train to Nowhere: Jenny by Laura Strickland

To find her happiness, first she must believe.

In keeping with our Books In A Series feature, Wild Women Authors presents Slow Train to Nowhere: Jenny, an American historical romance, written by Laura Strickland, and released by The Wild Rose Press.

About Slow Train to Nowhere: Jenny: Jenny Withers has never asked for much. Following a tragic childhood in England, she arrived in America only to be sent west on the orphan train and passed from one caregiver to another. Now grown and widowed, she might build a fulfilling future, but only if she finds the courage to stand up for her true desires.

Robert MacKenna hopes what Jenny desires is him. A man with a broken past and a restless spirit, he has trouble settling at anything. He’s never met a woman like Jenny, and he’ll move heaven and earth to be with her. But his toughest task may be convincing her he can provide the love for which she’s always yearned.

EXCERPT:

Their waitress appeared from the door that led to the kitchen, and his attention quickened. She was a petite woman, surely no more than five foot two, and small-boned with an air of fragility. Overloaded by the tray she toted, she struggled across the dining room, and he had to fight the impulse to jump up and take the burden from her. Waiting tables was her job. He wouldn’t want to insult her by assuming she couldn’t perform it.

People did not appreciate that.

All the same, the young woman did not look happy with her lot. Her rather plain face remained composed, but her eyes gave her away. Large brown eyes they were, fringed by thick lashes and full of a kind of sorrow that damn near pierced Robert through.

He wanted to make her smile, to chase away that deep sorrow. An unreasonable desire, since she was his waitress and he nothing more than her customer.

She placed two bowls of stew down on the table in front of them along with what looked like half a loaf of fresh-baked bread and a small cask of butter. Robert, usually glib of tongue, sought unsuccessfully for something to say.

“Thank you, miss,” Newton filled the gap with cool courtesy.

“You’re welcome. Would you gentlemen like coffee?”

“Please,” Robert croaked out.

She hurried off. Her feet must feel like stumps by the end of the day.

“I suppose we’ll have to stay another night with the Blighs,” said Newt, “if we’re to interview the mill owner. And this Sean Hussey who was mentioned. He seems to be out of town.”

Robert wrinkled his nose involuntarily. He liked nothing about the Blighs’ aside perhaps from the amiable Milo Digsby.

Their waitress came back with a coffee pot, having been waylaid by a customer at another table. She poured carefully, and for reasons unknown to him Robert looked at her left hand. No wedding ring.

“Thank you,” he told her, just to make her look at him. For an instant her wide, brown eyes met his and held. It made him feel like he’d been punched in the gut.

No smile touched her lips. She hurried away again.

“You’d think,” he muttered, “they’d have another waitress for this many tables.”

Newton looked surprised. “She seems to be keeping up. Stew’s good, if a bit rough and ready.”

Newton went on talking about the needs of the town, and Robert watched the waitress from the corner of his eye. She hustled to clear a vacated table and hurried to answer the demand of someone on the far side of the room. She dashed to the kitchen and returned in time to seat three men who looked like farmers. Her feet never stopped tapping the floor in a complicated dance.

“All in all,” Newton said, “I doubt I will recommend investment. They could use a better-class restaurant and God knows a hotel is called for. That cot at Blighs’ left a lot to be desired.”

“You should try the loose box.”

“Still and all, I don’t think Crowne Enterprises would get a good return on its money.”

The waitress took the new arrivals’ order and flew off to the kitchen again. What was her name? And did it matter?

He buttered a piece of bread and sopped up the last of his stew with it. He wondered what had put that depth of sadness in the woman’s eyes.

What would it take to make her smile?

Miss Green Eyes by Kara O'Neal

A salute to those who are good at small talk. . . and those who are masters at avoiding it.

About Miss Green Eyes: Annalee Gillespie finds her world shaken when her father dies and leaves her sole owner of the Circle G ranch. But when the will is read, she’s shaken again because she must make the trek up the Chisolm Trail with her foreman, the most irritating man in creation, and complete the tasks given to her—or control of the Circle G will fall into the hands of another.

Capable, smart and frustratingly handsome Ewan Judge has needled and teased Annalee through the years. Now she must learn to get along with him, the best cowboy in Texas. She accepts the challenge and finds herself in the midst of more than one enemy.

Today Wild Women Authors celebrates our Books In A Series feature with Kara O’Neal’s Miss Green Eyes, a Wildflower of Texas story and “the most irritating man in creation” Ewan Judge—who will go first.

Good morning, Mr. Judge. Let’s begin with you telling us where you are from. Burnett, Texas.

Tell us a bit about Miss Green Eyes. This story’s about making things right. Fixing things. Or, rather, fixing my relationship with Annalee, the woman I’ve loved since I was 16. She made me nervous, and she was also the boss’s daughter. So, instead of going after her, I set myself apart and teased her to keep distance between us. Her father figured all that out and sends me and Annalee on a trip up the Chisolm by ourselves so that I can win her heart.

What did you think the first time you saw Annalee? She was sitting beneath a windmill out on the range. She was reading. I thought she was the prettiest thing I’d ever set eyes on. Literally, took my breath from my chest and my heart jumped into her hands.

Was it love at first sight? For me? Yes. But I did everything I could not to let it show.

What do you like most about Annalee? She’s kind and generous, and family means a lot to her. Her father passed away and left her in charge of the Circle G, and instead of selling, which would force people to find another home, she is doing everything she can to keep it together.

How would you describe her? Her father did it best. He called her ‘Miss Green Eyes’ after the flower. Has a bright green center with yellow petals. Annalee’s eyes are the most brilliant green I’ve ever seen. The flower is also delicate, but hardy. Also just like my Annalee.

How would she describe you? Even when she didn’t like me too much, she called me the best cowboy in Texas. After we spent time alone, and I was brave enough to let her near, she learned more about me. Now she knows I’m quiet and reserved. I hate small talk, so she runs interference for me when I need her to.

What made you choose to become a cowboy? It chose me. Or Annalee’s father chose it for me. I was sixteen with no idea of what I ought to do. I applied for a job on the Circle G, and for some reason, Jack Gillespie took a liking to me. He discovered I had good instincts, so he took me under his wing. Treated me like a son. Turned out I loved the work.

What is your biggest fear? Losing Annalee.

How do you relax? I saddle up and ride the range with my wife. Our ranch has the best sunrises in the world.

Who is your favorite fictional character? Don’t do too much reading. Don’t have time for it. But, if I did read, I think I’d like that Sherlock Holmes fellow. Annalee has read those books.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received? Jack Gillespie, Annalee’s father, told me before he died, that the only thing worth living for, is love. He was right.

Thanks for this, Ewan. Now we’d like to chat with Kara O’Neal.

What movies or books have had an impact on your career as a writer? Probably the most influential is Anne of Green Gables. So many characters to love in those books. And I enjoyed discovering how they changed over time.

Is there an event in your private life that you were able to bring to this story and how do you feel it impacted the novel? Not an event, a person. My husband hates small talk. Can’t do it. So, I thought about a character who could be misunderstood because he’s more reserved, and Ewan Judge was born.

Tell us a bit about your publisher: how did you hear about them and what influenced your decision to submit to them? I am self-published now. I’d been with three other publishing companies, and I prefer self-publishing because I have so much freedom to do what I wish with my characters and my books.

What book[s] currently rest on your TBR pile?

All God’s Dangers: The Life of Nate Shaw; Freely Given by Jan Scarbrough and

Happy Nerd Year by Nancy Fraser

Last, what's up next and when can we expect to see it on the shelves?

Book 4 in my Wildflower series is next. At the moment, it’s called SUNFLOWERS FOR JOHN. We’ll see if it lasts. It’s about a man with a very broken heart who carries a secret torch for Millie, a kind-hearted, redhead who’s a little wary of his handsomeness and quiet reserve.

Excerpt

“Pierre Lenoir accused Moira of stealing his notes and discovering the tombs using his research, which put her discovery in a long legal battle. He demanded the Egyptian courts turn over the discovery to his team, saying that a lone woman with a meager team of village riffraff could not have discovered such riches.” He took a deep breath. “Tossing the situation into further turmoil, Miss White mysteriously disappeared shortly after the filing. The case remains unsolved, but they credited this finding to her alone.”

“Moira Joanna White. She sure is pretty. Too bad she’s dead.”

Dominic turned toward the exit as Evie spoke. “Wanna see her in real life?”

He stopped and turned to Evie. “What?”

Evie looked at Dominic, then at the Eye of Ra. Ewan stepped toward his sister as Dominic shot his hand out to stop him.

Ewan grabbed her shoulder. “Evie, don’t.”

Evie raised her hands. His ears buzzed, and the room filled with an electrified energy. He’d felt something like this on another assignment where he flew a unique craft. The “out of this world” one he couldn’t tell anyone about. The overcharged sensation overwhelmed Dominic in the same way. Evie shifted her hands, and the pupil of the Eye of Ra turned a little then rotated. It spun faster and faster, swirling into a gray mass. As the gray of the center faded, a picture appeared as he stared and the image moved.

Dominic stood transfixed. Before him was a movie of Moira White bent over a sarcophagus, cleaning it with a large brush. Her thick auburn hair caught the torchlight as dust particles flickered around her head. So, it was red. She turned as if someone had called her, making Dominic’s breath escape in a whoosh. Before him was a full-color live version of the photo. The stunning beauty from the past, alive before his eyes.

As she gave him a full smile, he moved forward, tilting his head. He returned the grin, completing the connection. The picture rotated off-center, and the air traveled around him. The ringing came back to his ears, louder.

A kid’s gasp came from behind as Ewan screamed, “Evie, what’s wrong? What’s happening?”

Dominic turned. Ewan held Evie's shoulders as she gasped for air and held her hands out to the eye. The wind picked up and swirled around them as the picture inside the eye’s pupil rotated faster.

Evie yelled over the wind, “I can’t control it, Ewan! It’s got a hold of me! I can’t stop it!” The churning wind dragged Evie toward the eye as Ewan grasped her shoulders, trying to push her away. A gust of wind pressed the twins, and they slid fast toward Dominic. When they slammed into him, his reflexes took over, and he grabbed them. He held both teenagers in his arms, trying to push them away from the eye.

Dominic searched for Doug and Kat and found they’d taken cover behind the chariot. Thank God he’s got only two to worry over. He yelled over the wind, “Doug, keep Kat safe. Stay there.”

Ewan cried out, “Evie, ye have to stop it! Close yer eyes! Shut it off!”

Tears streamed down Evie’s face. “I can’t. I’m frozen!” This can’t be! The eye dragged them toward it. The energized force pulled as Dominic tried to push away. Whatever this was, Dominic feared it was not good.

Dominic yelled over the wind, “Hold on, kids. I've got you!” He gathered them both in his arms as he fought to keep them from the eye. The wind hit them with a forceful blow, and all three flew into the Eye of Ra.

No Good Deed by C. D. Bennett

 No Good Deed…goes unpunished.

Wild Women Authors focus on No Good Deed, a contemporary novel of romantic suspense, written by C.D. Bennett and recently released out of the Wild Rose Press.

About the Book:

Kiya James’ relocation to idyllic Riverton Colorado is disrupted when she discovers a critically wounded man lying in a field near her home. Little did she know that her selfless act to save the man’s life would thrust her into a world of corruption, greed, and danger. As the only witness to the initial attack, and shaken by an attempt on her own life, Kiya is offered refuge with the victim’s family. Together, they struggle to uncover the circumstances that would trigger an unknown assailant to unleash a string of deadly attacks in an otherwise quiet rural ranching community.

Jake McCleary’s world could have been destroyed with a single bullet if it hadn’t been for the quick actions of a stranger. Now, in a desperate attempt to protect her, and his entire family, Jake must fight to defend his home, livelihood, and the woman who was rapidly capturing his heart, against the vicious actions of a criminal that will stop at absolutely nothing to get what he wants.

Excerpt:

Outside, the air had turned chilly causing Kiya to shiver slightly when the wind blew across the yard. Jake immediately wrapped his jacket around her shoulders. He had snagged it from a peg hanging inside the door as they were leaving. “What are you doing running around out here without a jacket?”

“Thanks, I didn’t need one on my way over, and I wasn’t expecting it to get so cold. The temperature changes fast around here,” she said as she snuggled farther into the jacket.

They made the short walk to the cabin in relative silence, but as they entered the glow given off by the light near the front door, Kiya stopped and turned toward Jake. “Thank you for inviting me tonight. It was great getting to see Dylan that way. Even if he still tires easily.”

“It’s surprising how effortless it is for you to tune in to how he’s feeling. You noticed his change in energy quicker than any of the rest of us.”

Jake’s words were spoken lightly, but his eyes appeared guarded. Kiya shrugged. “I know what to look for, that’s all.”

“I suppose that could be it,” he allowed.

The wind picked up again causing Kiya’s hair to flutter across her cheeks. Without thinking, Jake reached over and smoothed the silky strands away from her face, but the mental image of his brother’s interaction with her earlier in the evening had him pulling his hand back and shoving it into his pocket. He had been unprepared for his reaction to their almost instant and very obvious bond. He was struggling with the fact that he didn’t like it.
